Introduction
Marcus Tullius Cicero (106–43 BC) was a Roman statesman, orator, lawyer, and philosopher whose career unfolded during the Republic’s final political crisis. His speeches, dialogues, letters, and rhetorical works transmit Roman debates about law, civic duty, friendship, religion, and constitutional government. Jerome includes major philosophical and rhetorical works as well as speeches.
